Signs you need to replace your water heater

Water heaters don't last forever. At some point, you'll want to consider replacing the water heater altogether vs continually repairing it. To help you make an informed decision, we've provided a few signs that you should replace your water vs repair it.

You should consider replacing your water heater (vs repairing it) if:

  • You have a tank water heater that is 7+ years old or a tankless water heater that is 15+ years old.
  • Your water heater needs multiple repairs in the span of a single year.
  • Your tank water heater is leaking from the tank itself (vs from a pipe fitting).
  • Your family's hot water usage has changed/increased since the water heater was initially installed.
  • You see rust when you run hot water but not cold water.

What's the cost of a water heater repair in the Redlands area?

The price to repair a water heater in Redlands and the Inland Empire area can range from $109 to $1,000, with the average repair price being $225.

Of course, your water heater repair could end up being much higher or lower than this average price range depending on the following factors:

  • Whether your water heater is tank or tankless.
If you have a tankless water heater, you may pay more for your repair. Since tankless water heaters are more complex, their replacement parts are generally more expensive, which raises the cost of the repair. Additionally, tankless repairs can be more complicated, which increases the labor required to complete the job.
  • Whether or not your warranty is still valid.
Every water heater is sold with a manufacturer's warranty and a labor warranty. The manufacturer's warranty is provided by the manufacturer (i.e. Rheem, Bradford White, etc.) and covers the cost of any defective parts for a specific time frame. The labor warranty is provided by the contractor who first installed the water heater and covers any labor costs required due to faulty installation work. If one or both of these warranties are valid, you'll pay less for your water heater repair.
  • The company you hire.
Not all plumbing companies charge the same for water heater repairs. Typically, higher-quality companies with licensed and certified plumbers charge higher rates for their repairs. However, choosing a more qualified contractor will likely end up saving you more money in the long run. That's because they are more likely to get the job done right the first time, saving you from spending additional time and money on repeat work.
