Fire Mitigation Rebates

Fire mitigation rebates are a valuable resource for Southern California homeowners looking to invest in fire-resistant upgrades. These rebates are designed to encourage homeowners to take proactive steps in fortifying their homes against the threat of wildfires. By doing so, not only do you bolster your property's safety, but you also become eligible for financial incentives that can offset a portion of your expenses.

One of the most common fire-resistant upgrades that qualify for rebates is the installation of fire-resistant roofing materials. These materials, often constructed from metal, tile, or composition shingles, can greatly reduce the risk of sparks and embers igniting your home during a wildfire. Similarly, fire-resistant vents, windows, and siding can be eligible for rebates as well. strong>Another option is installing a Cool Roof to help reflect more sunlight from your roof.

California's Wildfire Mitigation Program also offers grants for homeowners in designated high-risk wildfire zones. These grants can cover a significant portion of the costs associated with defensible space creation, ember-resistant vent installation, and other essential fire prevention measures. Direct grants are available to socially vulnerable and low- and moderate-income homeowners.

Southern California Edison Rebates for High Fire-Risk Areas

It’s always a good idea to check Southern California Edison’s rebate web page for up-to-date information about rebates and incentives. Below are some current fire zone rebates they’re offering.

  • $150 towards an Electric Portable Power Station: Beginning September 1, 2022, homeowners who live in an area designated as a Tier 2 or Tier 3 high fire-risk area can receive up to five (5) $150 rebates for purchasing qualified Electric Portable Power Stations, per residential address.
  • $200 towards a Portable Power Generator: If you live in an area designated as a Tier 2 or Tier 3 high fire risk area you may be eligible to receive a $200 rebate for the purchase of a qualifying Portable Power Generator. Income-qualified or medical baseline customers can receive up to a $600 rebate.

Lastly, as many insurance providers have revoked or hiked up fire insurance rates for high-fire-risk areas, there may soon be fire-mitigation discounts available to homeowners who take measures to reduce fire damage to their homes.

The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP)

The Self-Generation Incentive Program or SGIP is a California statewide initiative to help homeowners adopt “self-generating” power, particularly during power outages that occur during wildfires. They’ve received nearly $1 billion in funding, and are providing direct rebates for homeowners that install energy storage systems, such as backup batteries.

Southern California Edison customers who live in a fire-zone area are eligible to receive up to $26,400 for a home battery installation through the end of 2024.
